Meet Pete DeMay

Pete DeMay talks with 12th Ward residents about what they want to see in their neighborhood

I am a McKinley Park resident and the father of two young children. My wife Liz and I also host a family of 5 asylum seekers in our home as they await their immigration proceedings, and we consider them to be family as well.

I was raised in a small town in rural Western New York where I learned about public service from my father, a union teacher and volunteer fireman, and my mother, a union social worker and elected school board member. Their example has helped shape my life.

After college, I joined the Peace Corps in Panama and taught Agriculture and Forestry. Upon my return to the US I began work in the labor movement, organizing low wage workers to join unions and win better wages and benefits. This fight for economic justice has been my life’s passion, and I have worked in Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico and throughout the United States in order to help people take on their employers and win. I am currently helping the workers of Entertainment Cruises – A Pritzker Group Company – form a union out at Navy Pier.

In addition to my labor work I am a proud, founding member of the 12th Ward IPO, and an early supporter of the group Neighbors For Environmental Justice (N4EJ) . I am also a member of the United Working Families Party and the Democratic Socialists of America. I am running for Alderman to fight for more resources for 12th Ward schools and parks, programs for youth, and to help create good, green jobs in our neighborhoods so that everybody can have a healthy and productive future.

I look forward to meeting you personally, and I would appreciate the opportunity to earn your vote for Alderman on February 26th, 2019.

Thank You!
